10 (more) reasons to go Vegan (at least with your cosmetics!)

I think by now we all know veganism is more than a trend, fad or a quirky diet. It’s a lifestyle. It encompasses relinquishing all animal by-products from every aspect of your life. And even if you’re not ready to give up the chicken nuggets and the fish and chips, going vegan in other aspects of your life might just be the way to help save the planet.

Switching to vegan-friendly cosmetics will mean all products you use will be 100% cruelty-free. No animal testing, no harvesting of raw animal ingredients.

And formulations have advanced so much that most vegan-friendly products contain less harmful chemicals that traditional formulations and more botanical and mineral ingredients as opposed to synthetic substitutes.

These formulas also tend to have fewer ingredients, which helps reduce the risk of irritations and allergies and the active ingredients tend to be richer in vitamins and minerals, which translates into a healthier looking you.

To help you get on your way with your vegan experience, here are some of our personal vegan favourites!

1. Real Techniques

A firm favourite of mine when it comes to brushes, for a long time they have delivered amazing performance at really attainable prices. I have them in my professional kit and on my personal collection. (Yes, I have a brush collection, I’m a makeup artist, what did you expect?) The synthetic bristles are so soft and perform just as well as any goat hair brushes out there. And their creations just keep getting better and better!

Crushing so hard on this Rebel Edge Trio, it’s not even funny!

Designed with creativity and experimentation in mind, you can get a myriad of results, depending on how you use them. You can get precise, clean lines by using them vertically or softer, blurred and blended edges by turning them sideways.

Go on, be a rebel!

2.Tropic Skincare

Tropic Skincare describe themselves as being pure, honest and effective… and they are!

Free from animal derivatives, parabens, SLS, microbeads and a host of other nasties, their products are clean, their labelling is straightforward and their products are, well, effective.

From makeup to hair and body care, they cater to all our beauty needs, and we love them for it!

Their award-winning skincare speaks for itself. I mean, their Sun Drops Tanning Serum alone is the #bombdotcom! (Hello customised tan!)

Right now, I’m loving the Pure Lagoon Blemish Prevention Serum. I suffer from hormonal breakouts which are quite frankly, the bane of my otherwise somewhat healthy skin’s existence, and this serum is such a heaven-send.

It helps to cool the skin and soothe the inflammation at the early stages of blemish breakout and prevents the spot causing bacteria from growing.

With hyaluronic acid, prebiotics, malachite crystal extract and blue spirulina in the ingredient list along with polyhydroxy acid (PHA) and zinc, it regulates the skin without skipping the all-important hydration. It’s a liquid, water-like formula, so really quickly absorbed, very gentle and super lightweight on the skin. I find 6 drops work best for me and my stubbornly oily-yet-dehydrated skin and it sinks in super quick, no residue.

Everyone needs some Tropic in their life.

3. Lush

Ok, so everyone knows by now we are HUGE Lush fans here at Boyfriend HQ. Not a secret.

We also know not all their products are created vegan, but they are most definitely created cruelty-free and environmentally conscious.

And I mean, who doesn’t love a Bath Bomb? And let’s not get started on the bubble bars…

But, what products they do have that are created vegan, are exquisite. Drumroll Veganese Conditioner, or Godiva Naked Shampoo Bar, DIVINE!

The first to create naked products (read, sans wasteful packaging whenever possible, not to be confused with the other naked products out there), they have always been mindful of sustainability and using eco-friendly resources.

Do I wish they’d rid more of their products of SLS (hint hint)? Yes, I do, but I know these things take time to research so I await with baited breath for the news to come that they have a suitable replacement that doesn’t compromise performance.

Until then, here’s another winning multi-tasker product that should be in everyone’s cosmetic arsenal.

Ultrabalm has minimal ingredients and high performance.

For all those chapped bits and dry skin. Use on heels, elbows, cuticles, hair, use everywhere.

4. Tangle Teezer

Since the original was launched, their collection has grown and grown, now encompassing styling brushes as well as the original detanglers.

The first Tangle Teezer I ever got was for my daughter’s unruly curly hair. You see my problem?

It worked wonders, as it does, and saved me and the little one from many crying seasons over the hair detangling situation.

Since then, I’ve added a couple more for myself.

The Round Blow brushes are perfect to style the hair whilst blow-drying, without pulling or any hair damage. Unlike the Originals, these were designed with heat in mind, so the materials used are heat resistant, but you still get the same amazing results, and since the brushes allow for free flow of air to help accelerate the blow dry, you also get good volume and shine.

Their unique designs ensure minimum fuss and maximum results.

They’re also entirely recyclable. But the lifespan of a Tangle Teezer hairbrush is actually quite long, so no need to even think about disposing of it anytime soon. But if you do have to replace it, remember, recycle it, don’t bin it.

5.Clark’s Botanicals

If you haven’t heard of Clark’s Botanicals, you need to change that right now. Born out a personal tragedy – the founder Francesco Clark suffered a spinal cord injury at age 24 and found a need for products to help rebalance his skin, which was no longer able to properly sweat and get rid of toxins, causing a lot of congestion and premature damage – Clark turned to his physician father whom had also homeopathic training, to develop botanical-based products that would help rebalance his skin. At the products’ core, you will find Jasmine Absolute, a precious essential oil that naturally rebalances skin, is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immuno-stimulating. It works to calm and heal most skin types, including sensitive. At the core of the brands’ ethos is a guarantee of never using animal derivatives or test on animals.

Now, Clark’s Botanicals doesn’t really follow product trends, they launch products that they feel are what is needed and make sense with the range they have. Which is just another reason to love them and their Retinol Rescue Eye Serum. Serums, in general, have more powerful active ingredients, penetrate quicker and deeper into the skin and eye serums overall work double time over traditional eye creams, which is why they are becoming increasingly popular.

The weightless formula of Clark’s Botanicals Retinol Rescue Eye Serum, with plankton extract to help restore luminosity, is ideal for treating ageing concerns and tired skin, helping to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and working to improve the appearance of skin texture.

6. Green People

There’s nothing quite like superfoods. For the inside of your body as well as out. There’s nothing quite like Green People superfoods.

Which is why we’re lusting over this Green People Quinoa range so much!

Might have noticed, big fan of Green People here. I mean, hello super-affordable, organic, vegan, effective cosmetics which cater to tiny-humans also (their kids’ range is fabulous!). What’s not to love?

Moving along, this quinoa infused range has a shower gel and hand & body lotion with added calendula, for soothing and healing, a roll-on deodorant with prebiotics to help balance the skin’s’ natural flora by supporting healthy bacteria and fighting odour causing bacteria, (smells lovely and fresh too, if you like citrus scents), a volumising (yay!) shampoo and conditioner with artichoke, for smoothness, as well as a quinoa hair serum with avocado to condition and help reverse hair damage, is great for sensitive skins and scalps and also contains a host of other goodies like ginger, lemongrass and aloe vera.

The whole range smells amazing too with a hint of citrus and ginger!

Quinoa Range by Green People, from £9.95, available at Waitrose, Ocado, Whole Foods, Planet Organic, as well as online at www.greenpeople.co.uk

7. Perfect Shade (oh the SHADE of it all!)

From the creators of the Perfect Shade comparison site comes the new Perfect shade makeup range, offering fun and affordable makeup for beauty junkies who seek high-pigmented and long-lasting products. This British beauty brand has created an entire product range that is 100% cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

The products are big on colour with rich pigments and strong colour payoff. With eight product categories ranging from lipsticks to face powders highlighters and eyeshadows, consisting of 75 shades, the Disco range was created with makeup addicts in mind, for the perfect Insta-worthy selfie.

Total standouts for me are the Ice Cream Tide Pressed Powders, which are so soft and blend so seamlessly into the skin and the ice cream cone in the design adds a bit of luminosity as the powder there is a bit shimmery but it’s such a cool design you don’t want to use it just so you won’t mess it up!

And the Playful Musician Liquid Lipsticks feel amazingly comfortable, great colour payoff with a matte finish that doesn’t dry out and go on nice and smooth. And all under a tenner! Just, winners.

8. Humble Co.

The Humble Co. is dedicated to making products that are good for you and kind to the planet. From their best-selling bamboo toothbrushes to their toothpaste and natural chewing gum, they’re committed to creating products that are fun to use, eco-friendly and socially responsible, because every Humble purchase helps fund projects that benefit children in need around the world.

The Humble Brush is available in two sizes – adult & kids (woohoo) – and a variety of fun colours. The bristles are incredibly soft nylon-6, which is a durable material that degrades over time (the time-frame being equivalent to that of wool, which is about a year) as there isn’t yet another plant-based material that could be used that will still allow the brushes to be used for the recommended 3 months. Here’s to hoping for more scientific advances on that area!

The ergonomically designed handle is made out of 100% biodegradable bamboo. Since bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth and is naturally antibacterial, there is no need to use fertilisers or pesticides during its cultivation.

The brush is packaged in a totally plant-based biodegradable wrapper and the box is made out of 100% recycled materials.

Feel Good, Do Good.

Go Humble.

9. White Glo

Since we’ve talking teeth, switching your toothpaste to a vegan alternative can help both your smile and the world we live in.

So many brands have now gone with creating organic, natural and vegan alternatives to traditional toothpaste, there’s no reason not to make the change!

Pure and Natural toothpaste is completely vegan and organic. Free from fluoride, and harmful chemicals like traditional toothpaste, there’s no reason not to give it a try.

The new White Glo is free of bleaches and other chemicals that are often incorporated into tooth whitening products, so this formula whitens teeth using natural ingredients. To try and combat the worrying number of plastic toothbrushes found in landfills all over the world (there’s an alarming estimated 1 billion in the U.S. alone!), White Glo toothpaste includes a free biodegradable bamboo toothbrush that naturally decomposes as opposed to plastic toothbrushes that take an estimated 400 years.

Be conscious.

Make the switch.

Pure & Natural by White Glow, RRP £6.00, available at Boots, Superdrug, ASDA, Tesco and Morrisons

10. Algenist

Another firm favourite here at Boyfriend is Algenist. Their products are simply that good!

At the core of their formulas is Alguronic Acid, an algae compound that protects cells, helps them survive, thrive and regenerate. Algae are one of the oldest and most nutrient-rich plants in the world, and Algenist harvest that power to deliver innovative, clean and safe anti-ageing formulas. Another key ingredient is microalgae oil, which allegedly keeps skin 5x more hydrated when compared to untreated skin, by delivering a complex of moisture and nutrient replenishing oils.

They never use animal by-products and are committed to ensure in-vitro testing is accepted by regulatory agencies worldwide (you can read all the info on their website).

This vegan brand has now launched GENIUS Liquid Collagen Lip.

A lip treatment that fills out and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles on and around the lip area, helps to improve the definition of the lip line, and promises to replenish and revitalize lips in just 10 days (an anti-ageing promise that is at the core of their mission ethos). In a unique dual-phase formula, Algenist combines a high percentage of active plant-based collagen, patented Alguronic Acid, botanical lip enhancers and hundreds of beads of Microalgae Oil. With a cooling ceramic tip applicator, lips feel soothed and refreshed.

The formula is actually very lightweight and feels incredibly comfortable on application.

Especially good for anyone who’s a smoker (I hope none of you are, don’t do that your bodies people!), as it will help with the premature ageing signs around the lip area caused by smoking.

Algae powered skincare just works.

Try it.
