Hayley Williams has made her long-awaited return to the music industry with her latest single “My Friend”. It’s the third single from her debut solo album – entitled “Petals for Armour”, set for release on May 8th. Williams, as the lead vocalist and songwriter for Paramore, was the sound of my teens, during those years she touched many hearts through the band.
These latest singles, however, shows Williams taking a step away from the rock sound that’s she became so accustomed to. In comes a softer sound, and a more personal style. On “My Friend”, the slow pace of the song, focuses on her vocal range, where she often sounds angelic. Yet, on both “Over Yet” and “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris” the tempo is far more upbeat, both songs and still personal but she no longer sounds as sensitive. The previews we have to go by so far, are quite broad, so it will be very interesting to see how the final output sounds.
I find the title to be particularly interesting, “Petals for Armour” gives me an image of sensitivity, a signal that this album may well just be her most intimate to date. Perhaps it represents a personal strength that you’re not aware of, Williams shows a sense of empowerment with this.
If you’re just as intrigued as we are about “Petals for Armour”, then you can see a video for “My Friend” below. If you’re also spending as much time as I am doing exercise – it passes time – then Hayley has also done a workout video, you can see that below, as well.
