Over the course of the last 12 months, Anja Kotar’s career has really taken flight. The singer songwriter has encapsulated a loyal fan base with a sea of releases that tackle genuine everyday issues that we all share. This personal approach has seen the artist take inspiration from online dating, toxic beauty standards as well as our generations relationship with technology, within her song writing. Now, with the release of her latest single ‘Simple’, Anja draws on life under lock down, trying to take the positives around this unique time. The artist has really created her own blend of emotional pop music, with a twist.
The artist comments on the single, “With global lockdowns, people were suddenly confined to their homes and life changed dramatically. Surrounded by four walls and a door, we were sort of forced to turn inwards and start focusing on our true selves, free from the distractions and busy schedules of life as ‘normal’. With so much going wrong this year, I wanted to write a song about all the good that has come out of it. I’ve always believed that one of the greatest and most useful skills to acquire in life is the ability to find the brightness in the darkest of spots and ‘Simple’ is my musical version of that.”
It’s that aspect of finding light from within the darkness that draws us to Anja. In many ways her approach to song writing appears almost fearless – no subject seems to be off the table. That’s something you don’t get with pop very often. Compared to the artist’s previous releases, ‘Simple’ is very stripped back, perhaps due to the fact it’s fully recorded from her home, with her family supplying backing vocals. For anyone searching for something a little more upbeat, Anja has plenty of that on her Spotify.
