It would be hard to imagine living in a stranger time than we are now. Monday marks the 8-week point of the UK’s lockdown – cabin fever now has a whole new meaning. One thing that I think we can all take from this experience, is a different perspective on life. It’s impossible not to – the world we left 2 months ago, simply isn’t there anymore. This has carried over into creative world, times of crisis always tend to create beautiful outcomes.
Josh Levi is the latest we’ve noticed creating commanding music. His latest single, “If the World”, is a touching evaluation of the world’s current predicament, posing the question: “If the world was ending, what would really matter to you?” It’s not often you get such a sincere outcome from a pop ballad, but Josh’s powerful vocals gives the topic the severity it deserves. As a listener, you can’t help but ask the question yourself after listening the first time around.
The song marks an important moment in Levi’s career. The American even created a music video shot on his iPhone, which captured the reality for his last few months in quarantine. At the age of just 21, he has shown a level of maturity beyond his years, not surprising considering his achievements to date, from being a finalist on the X Factor to landing a recurring role in the television series Friday Night Lights.
We had the opportunity to interview Levi about the current lockdown, and his upcoming EP release…
Why do you feel that now is the right time for you to release new material? Has the current crisis had any bearing on that decision at all?
Music will never stop, I just realized that. Thankfully, music happens to be one of the only things I have control over in my life right now, so this became a prime time for me to use my gifts. Like everyone else, I set out to have all these big plans for 2020 in terms of putting my first body of work out, and accomplishing more with my music than ever before, but I was scared and uncertain. After I realized COVID-19 introduced us to a new normal, I committed to just going for it!
How do you think the current pandemic has helped with your creativity? Do you feel its stunted or inhibited you, or has it actually flourished?
It really depends on the day. There are days where I feel like I’m more inspired than I would have been if COVID-19 never existed, and then there are days when I don’t want to do anything at all *laughs*. I’m counting my blessings. It’s strange how a time like this can bring the best out of you. My back is against the wall just like a lot of people during this time, and I’m finding myself accomplishing things I didn’t know I could do, but again, I take it day by day. I try not to force anything.”
We know we’re anticipating an EP from you very soon, can you tell us any more about it?
My EP is just an intro to my point of view as an artist! I wanted to create a world for people to live in and escape to with these songs. It’s also genre-less; there’s a little bit of everything which is a reflection of who I am. I’m so excited and am also looking forward to creating a visual for each song!
Levi is set to release his debut full body of work, in the form of an EP, in the coming weeks. “If the World” gives us a taster of where the artist is at, and it will be intriguing to see if these personal touches carry over across the EP. If it does, alongside the exciting production, Levi could be set for a remarkable debut, which would likely catapult him into headphones across the world. With recognition from the likes of Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish and Sam Smith, it’s only a matter of time before everyone else takes notice.
