Beauty Features

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Eye Creams!

If you’re wondering “why are we talking eye creams at this stage?” It’s because here is where they should enter your routine. After toners and before serums. This might change on the days you’re using an acid exfoliator, in which case you’d cleanse, exfoliate, mist tone and then apply your eye cream product and then serum, but we’ll discuss acid exfoliators another time!

The point being, eye products should be applied before serums and moisturisers because no matter how carefully applied, serums and creams will always reach the orbital bone and be absorbed by the delicate skin around the eyes which will then not be able to absorb the eye products, making them pointless, and it it might become “congested” or irritated with excessively rich products that might contain fragrance and weren’t designed for the eye area. Here is where it gets to be a bit tricky also, because the skin around the eye area is quite a bit thinner and more fragile than the rest of our face, so not all the same rules apply, and there’s a few extra added.

You’ll need products that not only are suitable to your skin type but are gentle enough to be used in the delicate eye area and target the other concerns we usually have around the eyes. For starters, eye products should not contain added fragrance. You don’t need it around your eyes and it will probably just aggravate and irritate the very delicate skin there. Most products will be formulated more with the concerns in mind rather than skin type, so it’s often a question of trial and error to find the formulation that works for you. Does it tackle dark circles? Puffiness? First lines and wrinkles? Dehydration? Is it nourishing enough for drier skin? Is it light enough for the oiler skin types? Also, if you’re having health issues, on medication, sleep deprived, poor diet or are a smoker, it will show in your eyes and the skin surrounding them.

Creams and topical treatments will only go so far to help some of the issues these will cause on your eye area (puffiness, bags, dark circles, discolouration, etc), they can’t do magic and “fix” everything, and for the most part, you’ll need continuous use if you want to see those results carry on, but they will help to some extent! The formulas will differ from traditional face creams and serums because the skin around the eyes is thinner, thus needing formulas that won’t overwhelm it and are easily absorbed. Key is also the quantities used. Don’t go overboard with applying more than what is recommended because your skin will resent it, either by exacerbating puffiness, under eye bags or even the milia around your eyes (milia are those little cysts made of keratin, not sebum, usually located around the eye area, that look like spots, BUT AREN’T. Don’t try to pop them, you’ll only hurt yourself and damage your skin. You can have them professionally removed or, with the right routine, get rid of them naturally).

For the most part eye cream formulas are designed to suit all skin types, basically treating all eye areas like sensitive skin, since as we mentioned, the skin there is much more delicate. On another note, I’m not easily impressed by eye creams. Often times I find they are to rich for my skin, which means I can’t see any benefits from then because my skin just won’t tolerate them, no matter how little I use, or even if they agree with my skin, I don’t see many results, so for me to actually be impressed enough by an eye cream to recommend it, it’s a feat. Obviously not all of the eye creams on this list were tested by me continuously, as they weren’t adequate for my skin, but I had my trusty volunteers (yes, I volunteer my friends and family to help out) test them for me and feedback their findings.

The Devices

Opatra Dermieye Device, RRP £279.00

This little device is unique in the sense that it works with a smart touch sensor, which only operates when its one of a kind ION technology operates with your own skin’s natural electrical current to send pulses through your skin to help creams absorb better into the skin. That helps reduce puffiness and wrinkles around the eyes. At the same time, the vibration massage stimulates blood circulation within the under eye blood vessels and helps regenerate skin cells production. This transfers the eye cream’s ingredients straight into dermal layers, allowing it to absorb much faster. As a result, you see the effects much quicker! Incredibly lightweight, slim and portable and with a lifetime warranty, it’s a device that will moderately reduce the appearance of dark circles, under-eye bags (puffiness), and even fine lines, all in just a few weeks of continuous use. After applying your eye cream, pick up the device and place your fingers on the metal plate located at the back of the device and place the head of the device onto your eye area. This completes the electrical circuit. The device will begin to vibrate, stimulating your blood cells and encouraging the skin to absorb the eye cream or serum of your choice. The little massage feels brilliant!

Peep Club Refresher Kit for Tired Eyes, RRP £80.00

Co-founder Nicola, who’s an optometrist, recommended to me to use the eye wand in conjunction with their eye spray and coconut balm to soothe and my eye cream of choice for optimal results, as they are designed to optimise, enhance and work together with your usual products. Designed to relieve dry, tired, irritated eyes by stimulating natural hydration, Peep Club’s Eye Wand is the desk-side device you really need to know about. Often we don’t even realise we suffer from dry eyes, as it’s not something with cookie cutter symptoms and is mostly associated with ageing and even menopause. But the fact is, modern life (and the current world situation especially) has thrust us to be in front of screens for much longer periods of time, increasing the periods of intense concentration in which we are not blinking as much as we should, thus not keeping our eyes as hydrated (that’s what tear is for) as they should, making them more vulnerable to infection.

How often have you wondered if you’d developed a sudden allergy to your mascara or eye cream because your eyes suddenly started stinging or watering when you apply them? Suffering from dry eyes will mean you lost the natural antibacterial protection your tear provides them, making them feel sensitised and vulnerable, which will make them sense your usual eye products as the aggressors. Using the Instant Relief Eye Spray will fortify the eye area and help your tear replenish itself. Plus when used together with the Eye Wand, the combination of heat and massage then works to gently stimulate and unblock the tiny glands responsible for hydrating your eyes. “It’s like a hot stone massage for the eyes,” says Natasha, co-founder and previous sufferer of screen-induced dry eyes. Even those who don’t suffer from dry eyes can benefit from using the Eye Wand. Boosted with circulation encouraging and lymphatic drainage functions, the device also helps to de-puff both under and upper eyelids. It also promotes youth-enhancing collagen and elastin production thanks to red light LED therapy. As Natasha puts it, the Eye Wand is “a treat, not just a treatment for dry eyes.” Use the Soothing Coconut Balm to cleanse and nourish the eye area.

You can use the spray up to 4 times a day, morning, evening and as a top up throughout the day (I mean, you can use it more often if you really need it, but you’ll easily find it’s not necessary to spray too often). To use the wand, heat it up to 37°C – 42°C max (this should take about 1 minute). Gently run the wand along your lower lid (below your eyelashes) starting with the inner corner of your eye and slowly working your way to the outer corner of your eye. One run from inner to outer corner should take 10-15 seconds. Repeat this motion for 60 seconds. Repeat the process for your upper lid (they advise turning the red LED light off when the wand is being used on the upper lid). Repeat the process on the other eye. For best results, use morning and evening for 2 weeks and then only as needed, for optimal eye maintenance. Not recommended for use longer than 60 seconds per area.

Dark Circles

Let me start by saying, most dark circles are genetic, but some will appear when blood vessels close to the skins’ surface move closer to the top layer of the skin, becoming more visible. That can be caused by a lack of sleep, ageing, stress, or even lack of iron in your diet, but if they are purely genetic no amount of cream will make them “go away”. Creams will however help, together with a good concealer, to brighten and diminish their appearance, but that’s about it. If your dark circles are instead from a lack of sleep, these will be slightly more effective.

Puffiness/Under Eye Bags

Puffiness and under eye bags can be due to lifestyle, like smoking and an uneven sleep pattern, diet (a diet high in salt causes water retention and can lead to swelling), or medication (like antibiotics) and illness, like allergies, where congestion and inflammation can sometimes exacerbate under-eye puffiness or thyroid problems can cause the eyes to become swollen. Having under-eye bags can also be a genetic physical characteristic that runs in your family. Another cause can be the natural aging process, loss of firmness in the skin and muscles happens as we age.

Dry/Dehydrated/Fine Lines

No, dry and dehydrated are not the same thing! Dry skin usually lacks or is very low on the natural oils (sebum) our skin produces to protect itself, meaning the skin’s protective barrier can be easily depleted or compromised and there may also be a lack of natural moisturising factors or NMF (usually our skin produces these also, these commonly being squalane, wax esters and triglycerides). Dry skin will usually feel tight and uncomfortable and look dull and lackluster and sometimes be flaky. Dehydrated skin is missing water, not oil, and that is usually caused by external factors such as extreme/constant weather changes (air con, heating, cold, etc), unbalanced diet or lack of proper water intake, medication, hormonal changes, too much caffeine or alcohol or even stress, among other things. Dehydrated skin will also feel tight and look dull. People who suffer from dry, dehydrated or sensitive will be more likely to experience fine lines around the eye area. These are usually caused by the fact the delicate skin around the eyes is lacking hydration as well as some natural lipids.

For the most part, this is what happens when “ageing” happens. The loss of tone and firmness that come from our skin producing less collagen around the eye area make expression lines more pronounced and the eye contour begins to sag. Ageing signs are usually more pronounced and easily the first area to show them is the eye area due to it being so delicate and the skin being so thin. Also, the tissue below the eyes is naturally missing a lot of essential soft tissue like fat or muscle, which help give skin some of its support.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitivity isn’t a skin type per se, it’s more of a skin condition that can be triggered by lifestyle or it can be genetic. Sensitive skin is “defined” by a depleted protective layer (which is what gives skin it’s barrier function that protects skin from external aggressions). So if your skin usually reacts badly to products or harsh weather conditions and gets inflamed, red, blotchy and/or itchy (this is called dermatitis), then you need to treat it as sensitive skin as it is likely it will continually react that same way. (There are many other skin conditions out there, such as dehydration, acne, rosacea, etc. These are usually – hopefully – temporary and caused by external factors like lifestyle, but some, such as eczema or psoriasis, can be triggered by illness or genetic factors, and harder to tackle and usually require some medical attention.) All skin types can suffer from sensitivity, although drier skins are usually more prone to it due to the skin’s protective barrier being depleted.

The skin around the eyes is four times thinner than the skin on the rest of the face and is highly sensitive. This makes it more susceptible to external aggressions, allergies and irritations. The incredibly smooth and surprisingly balmy texture soothes irritation and itching, reduces redness and limits the appearance of irritations, hydrates and restores lipids to strengthen the skin barrier and protects skin from external aggressions while also being quite easy to apply and easily absorbed leaving skin with a long-lasting comfortable feel.
