Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse
The power of a good cleanser is often underestimated since most people still underrate the importance of a proper cleanse as a big part of their skincare routine. From double duty balmy cleansers to the softest rinse-off milks, we bring you a roundup of some of our favourite, sustainable cleansing products out there for all skin types and needs. Choosing these products and actually breaking them down into skin type categories wasn’t always easy, as some of them are perfectly suitable for more than one skin type or condition, particularly the more multi-purpose cleanser/makeup remover products, but we tried to make it easier to navigate through and find something that might suit all your cleansing needs. Over the next upcoming weeks, we’ll be bringing you the products for the next steps on a skincare routine, one by one, for all skin types and conditions.
The Cleansing Devices
Foreo Luna 3 and Luna 3 Mini, RRP £169.00 and £139.00 respectively
I’m not usually a big fan of cleansing devices, (as I find they mostly just move the dirt, makeup and grime around, you’re basically physically exfoliating your face on a daily and, are those bristles ever really properly clean?), however I’ve found you don’t have those issues with the Foreo devices (I do enjoy mine tremendously), as they are made of silicone, so no dodgy bristled brush heads to contend with and they are much gentler on the skin! And, not only do they require zero replacement brush heads – ever – their silicone material also means that they’re built to last and are super easy to clean and maintain properly sanitised. Better yet, they’ve actually been shown to boost skin’s absorption of other skincare products – meaning you possibly buy less, generate less waste, and by extension, reduce your environmental footprint.
LUNA 3 is a great addition to your cleansing ritual and a true skincare investment. Featuring upgraded T-Sonic™ pulsations at 16 different intensities, it blasts away dirt, oil and makeup residue in only one minute. With an improved design that offers longer and softer silicone touchpoints and app-connected firming massage routines – which is a brilliant upgraded integration for those wanting to get that dreamy youthful glow – one side has the brush head and the other side the massage ridges. Also, it comes colour coded for different skin types, Pink for Normal Skin, Mint for Oily/Combination Skin and Lilac for Sensitive, which just means the touchpoints on each brush head are slightly different for each one of them (the different colours just make it more fun) and the LUNA mini 3 is an upgraded T-Sonic™ facial cleanser and massager with twelve adjustable massage intensities and a dual cleansing surface for a fully customizable skincare experience. The new Swedish design features brand new Glow Boost mode, which is a quick-press 30 second cleanse, a larger brush head, app connectivity and softer, longer touchpoints, all adding up to a better, deeper cleanse.
Both available at foreo.com
RÉDUIT Spa, RRP £179.00
RÉDUIT Spa is brand new tech for your skin, delivering the purest ingredients directly to your pores. Now, we’d seen the RÉDUIT device in action before, when they launched their haircare version. This professional-grade hand-held device uses ultrasonic diffusion to mist the ingredients onto the skin, allowing it to perfectly absorb droplets which are 50 times smaller than a traditional spray. The result is beautiful, healthy-looking skin in seconds. This device debuts a never-before-seen skincare application system using ultrasonic magnetic misting, ultrasonic diffusion technology, as well as LED therapy, to target a range of skincare concerns from pollution, ageing and hydration to achieving a clear, dewy complexion.
It’s a brilliant device for anyone that wants a “hands-off” application, as you never have to touch your face when you use it. (Fellow beauty pros, can you imagine the possibilities?) The Skinpods™ are easy to recycle and they will greatly reduce your plastic waste. You can use their own brand products and soon you’ll be able to use products from partnering brands.
At only 5ml, RÉDUIT’s tiny Skinpods™ are the equivalent to a full-sized product and deliver up to 40 applications (on an estimated 15 seconds per pod application). The highly concentrated formulations contain only the most powerful ingredients for maximum results. Retail prices for the pods start at £28.90.
The cleanser range currently includes:
- Clean Vapour – Created especially for sensitive skin, as the perfect 2nd step to a double cleansing routine, or as a morning cleanser, it gently removes residual oil and grime, leaving skin smooth and hydrated.

Marley’s Monsters Facial Rounds, RRP from £13.95 for a bundle of 20
Make your cleansing routine that little bit more eco-friendly and fun with Marley’s Monsters. This set of 20 facial rounds is a great way of eliminating disposable cotton pads and facial wipes (the horror!) from your home! These Facial Rounds are made with two layers of 100% cotton flannel which becomes more absorbent after a few washes. Each round is approximately 3″ (7.5cms) in diameter and the edges are overlocked for durability and to prevent fraying. The Mixed Prints bundle features a variety of vibrant, bold graphic prints – with a different print on each side, and is just a breath of fresh air in your bathroom cabinet. There’s a bunch to choose from, from Natural Organic, bright, cheery Vintage Lemon Print (love!), Monochrome Print, colourful Rainbow Solids, Plaid Prints or Floral Prints amongst others. They’re easy to care for, you can machine wash them warm with like colours (just pop them in a Mesh Laundry Bag) and they can be air or machine dried. The pads are not pre-washed so expect some shrinkage for the first couple of washes.
Sensitivity isn’t a skin type per se, it’s more of a skin condition that can be triggered by lifestyle or it can be genetic. Sensitive skin is “defined” by a depleted protective layer (which is what gives skin it’s barrier function that protects skin from external aggressions). So if your skin usually reacts badly to products or harsh weather conditions and gets inflamed, red, blotchy and/or itchy (this is called dermatitis), then you need to treat it as sensitive skin as it is likely it will continually react that same way. (There are many other skin conditions out there, such as dehydration, acne, rosacea, etc. These are usually – hopefully – temporary and caused by external factors like lifestyle, but some, such as eczema or psoriasis, can be triggered by illness or genetic factors, and harder to tackle and usually require some medical attention.) All skin types can suffer from sensitivity, although drier skins are usually more prone to it due to the skin’s protective barrier being depleted.

4.Burt’s Bees Sensitive Skin Cleanser, RRP £11.49 for 170gr
Created to gently remove dirt, oil and makeup without causing redness or irritation, this gentle cleanser offers a deep clean that’s extra kind to sensitive skin. Proven to moisturise while gently removing makeup, excess sebum and daily grime, this formula uses softening Cotton Extract, which helps sustain moisture, along with soothing Aloe for a complete, gentle treatment. As a brand they try to avoid new materials and unnecessary packaging, and make sure all of their packages are recyclable or reusable. They put an average of 52% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in their plastics and choose high-integrity materials that are more readily recyclable. That includes aluminum, steel, paper, glass, and plastics like PETE, HDPE and PP, with (as stated) as much PCR as possible. Choices like these help them limit their footprint and cut out unnecessary plastics, thus helping reduce plastic waste. Once their packaging has served its initial purpose, if they’ve made it easy to recycle, then they’ve made it easier for us (the consumers) to help close the loop. They also work in collaboration with TerraCycle and have landfill free operations, Water Restoration, Re-wilding efforts and a Carbon Neutral Certification.
5.SVR Sensifine Cleansing Balm, RRP £15.00 for 100ml
This incredibly pleasurable to use, gentle formula is made with only 9 ingredients and is fragrance-free, making it ideal for hyper-sensitive, intolerant, reactive and allergy prone skin (*raises hand*). Because hyper-sensitive skin won’t usually tolerate cleansing with a cotton pad or even a flannel, SVR has designed a balm that eliminates impurities and pollution residue while strengthening the skin barrier. It neutralises the effects of hard water on skin and leaves it ultra-comfortable after rinsing. Incredibly comfortable and effective to use, the 40% nutritive complex contains Shea Butter, Coconut and Sunflower Oils, to envelop skin in all their nutritive and anti-tightness properties to gently remove makeup, leaving skin soothed, calm and cocooned in comfort, without any tightness or itchiness. The sensory texture with a double transformation starts as a creamy balm that turns into an oil on contact with the skin, and then turns into an incredibly light lotion on contact with water. Great as a 1st or 2nd cleanse due to its gentle, balmy texture. I love this when my skin is acting up because it’s so incredibly gentle and soothing.
6.Clockface Beauty Signature Facial Cleansing Balm, RRP £32.00 for 120ml
The Facial Cleansing Balm is a rich balm to oil cleanser, made up of 12 oils and butters only. You’ll experience a deep, thorough clean that leaves skin feeling hydrated and conditioned.
This powerful cleanser helps to hydrate skin, whilst dissolving excess sebum so skin is left feeling perfectly balanced. With Coconut and Tamanu Oil which will treat inflamed skin, as well as Eucalyptus, and its natural antiseptic properties, give you a deep down clean whilst relieving irritated or angry skin, due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Watermelon Oil will work deep into the pores to remove excess sebum and dead skin cells. Vitamin E will protect skin against pollution as well as help reduce inflammation. Avocado Butter and Rosehip Oil will hydrate and fight signs of ageing. Rosemary Oil helps remove toxins whilst promoting circulation, so skin is left naturally glowing. Also, the Eucalyptus and Chamomile will invigorate and uplift your mood, whilst offering a feeling of comfort. Clockface Beauty is 100% natural skincare that contains only nutrient-rich ingredients, so this product is completely waterless. And just as the rest of the range, the Cleansing Balm is vegan and cruelty-free. Ideal as a 1st cleanse on oilier skin types or as a 2nd cleanse on drier skin types. To use as part of a double cleanse routine, rub a small amount of the balm into your hands until it turns into a silky oil then massage it into dry skin, and really focus on areas that might need extra care before rinsing away with warm water. Pat skin dry before repeating a second cleanse, but this time gently wipe the balm off the skin using a face cloth soaked in hot water.
This is a mix of different skin types and quite possibly the most common skin type nowadays. Usually it’s defined by a slightly oilier or balanced T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and drier or more dehydrated cheeks.
1.Syrene Aquagel Oil to Foam Cleanser, RRP £46.00 for 120ml

This not only cleans up the waters, but also helps reduce Co2 emissions by >60% compared to virgin plastic, which leads to the use of less energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases. To date, Syrene has already helped remove approximately 180,000 plastic bags from our oceans!

Acne is a different condition that can happen to anyone, regardless of skin type, and it’s usually either hormone related (which is why it’s so common during adolescence and around periods) or sensitivity/allergy related.

Dry Skin/Dehydrated Skin
No, dry and dehydrated are not the same thing! Dry skin usually lacks or is very low on the natural oils (sebum) our skin produces to protect itself, meaning the skin’s protective barrier can be easily depleted or compromised and there may also be a lack of natural moisturising factors or NMF (usually our skin produces these also, these commonly being squalane, wax esters and triglycerides). Dry skin will usually feel tight and uncomfortable and look dull and lackluster and sometimes be flaky. Dehydrated skin is missing water, not oil, and that is usually caused by external factors such as extreme/constant weather changes (air con, heating, cold, etc), unbalanced diet or lack of proper water intake, medication, hormonal changes, too much caffeine or alcohol or even stress, among other things. Dehydrated skin will also feel tight and look dull.

Balanced skin can still get dehydrated or sensitised or even get occasional spots.

Hyaluronic Acid helps to replenish moisture into the skin and it teams up with a Coconut-derived Surfactant, Papaya Enzymes that are harnessed to remove dead skin cells and brighten skin, and Hibiscus Flower Acids to promote cell renewal, to help keep your skin clean, soft, and bright. These extracts are little powerhouses that help to strengthen the skin’s barrier to better retain and absorb moisture.
Perfect for all skin types, this gentle but effective lightly foaming cream cleanser (it’s really more of a super gentle lather rather than a foam) can be used as a single or double cleanse, morning and evening, and doesn’t leave skin feeling tight, stripped or dried out or leave a residue.
