Exploring the world seems like such a distant consideration for many of us in lockdown, so when I was sent these videos of the buying process for Lush, I sat in awe of their splendor and got prangs of wanderlust…

Lush has a strong Ethical Buying Policy which can be found HERE , and they pride themselves on using the highest quality, and most beautiful ingredients, and to find them, you have to explore the wider world.

Below are some of the buying videos Lush have curated, giving us a small taste of the lengths they go to to ensure their products are the best possible quality for us. We adore these because they not only take us on a bit of an armchair holiday, but they also highlight the importance of Buyers in the industry.

Lavender Oil
Travel to the sunny south of France and meet Lush’s lavender supplier who has perfected his growing and distillation methods with over 100 years of business. Lavender oil is naturally antimicrobial and soothing. The flowers release a beautiful fragrance that quiet the mind and promote restful sleep.

Tonka Absolute
Travel to Amazon rainforest in Brazil and learn about the Kayapo communities that collect the tonka beans used within many Lush products including Sleepy. Though tonka absolute is very soothing to the skin, it is especially sought after for its sweet and comforting aroma.

Sustainable harvest of the tonka beans generates income for Kayapó communities, which contributes to the enhancement of their quality of life as well as enabling them to help protect their forest home against external economic forces bent on destruction: mining, logging and cattle ranching.

Argan Oil (Morocco)
The golden argan oil is praised for its many benefits on skin and hair. Soothing, conditioning, hydrating… get used to glorious hair and healthy skin. Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the argan tree. In Morocco, where Lush buys the precious oil, the very hard kernels are crushed by hand by women from different co-operatives, in respect of the traditional method. The released seeds are then sent to Agadir where they are pressed to make the oil.

Toothed wrack seaweed (Dorset)
Lush’s seaweed is harvested from Poole’s coastline once a week, making sure they take only the tops of the algae to ensure continuous growth. They also examine it when we harvest it to make sure any sea creatures stay in their home and don’t get taken to the factory. Toothed wrack seaweed (Fucus serratus) is highly nutritious and helps to strengthen hair, and to revitalise and protect the skin. It contains large amounts of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements and forms a barrier on the skin, helping to retain moisture.
